New year, A Challenging Question.

Every January as the new year rolls around, I like to challenge our church with a vision for the upcoming year. As I prayed and asked the Lord for direction for 2012, the answer became clear as the Lord asked me what I wanted to see Kendale accomplish this year. More than anything, when 2012 is over and in the books I want people to be able to say that our church made a difference in their lives and in the work of the Lord. With that in mind, the vision became clear, and the challenge became clear. For 2012, we are asking ourselves the question "Are We Making a Difference". Our key verse for the year is Jude 1:22 "And of some have compassion, making a difference". In addition to the service opportunities offered through the church, we will be challenging our church with a task every week to make a difference in someones life. My sincere prayer through 2012 is that my life will make a difference and that our church will make a difference.

30 Days of Thanksgiving

With this being the month of Thanksgiving, I have set forth a challenge to our folks at Kendale Acres called the 30 Days of Thanksgiving. The challenge is to record something that they are thankful for each day of the month. By the end of the month we will have at least 30 things that we are thankful for. Honestly, we spend much time complaining about life, and little time being thankful. This will help us next time we are tempted to grumble, we can pull this list out and see how much we truly have to be thankful for. Would you think about joining in this challenge with us. God is so good and if we would just take a moment, we would find how much we truly have to be thankful for.

We have been in revival this week with Rev. John Johnson, Associate Pastor at Parker's Chapel FWB Church. What a blessing these meetings were to my heart. As a preacher, I spend my time in the word of God regularly, but it does not take the place of hearing the word of God preached. I just pray that our people were as challenged as I was. Something that Bro. John said that really stuck with me through the week was "God is the God of an open hand not a closed fist". So many see God as this harsh dictator that is just waiting for us to mess up so He can punish us. That is not the God we serve. God wants a relationship with us. Jesus says in Rev. 3:20 that He is standing at the door knocking wanting to come in and fellowship with us. It is up to us to open that door and let Him in. Do you have that fellowship? If not, open the door today and let Him in. It is a decision you will never regret.

Gettting Back to Normal

April 16, 2011 just before 3pm, the lights began to dim rapidly off and then on and an eerie feeling filled the air. Something wasn't right and in just a few moments it was obvious what that was. An ef3 tornado had Kendale Acres Church and our surrounding community in its cross hairs. I hunkered down in the bathroom and after about 30 seconds of listening to things pound against the parsonage and the sound of a freight train going overhead I emerge to find the landscape of our small community forever changed. Homes reduced to piles of rubble, others stripped of roofs and siding. I have never seen anything like it in all of my life. As I stepped out on the porch all I could smell was the scent of pine from all of the trees that were snapped in half just like toothpicks. We rushed from home to home to make sure everyone was ok and God's grace became more and more evident as homeowner after homeowner was accounted for. Many with scrapes and bruises, but all alive. Our neighborhood had been destroyed, but our faith was standing strong. In the days to follow we were able to see the community pull together in a way such as never seen before. As a church we found ourselves as the central outreach center for our area in the relief effort. It has brought us closer to our neighbors and it has allowed us to put our faith into action in a very new and real way. This event has not only changed the landscape forever, it has changed my outlook on our church forever. My prayer is that the Lord will help us be a community church, not just a church in the community. We ask you to please keep us in your prayers as we help our neighbors get their lives back to normal.

Wonderful Fellowship / Great Lesson

We are a week removed from our annual Bar-B Q fundraiser here at Kendale. As always it was much work, but also much fun. I enjoy the time of fellowship with our people, whether it is chopping barbecue, out on the town, or a dinner here at the church. There is just something about when God's people get together. To see the unity as we try to accomplish one common goal is always a blessing. This year we opened it up to deliveries and with over 600 plates going out for delivery, most with in the same hour, we certainly had to come together. The lesson I pray we all took home is that we can do it when we work together. If we can come together to distribute the physical food then we can come together to deliver the spiritual food of God's Word. Our church theme this year is 'Send Me'. It is our goal to provide opportunities throughout the year when we as a body can come together and answer that challenge. We have been sent by God to reach our community and our world for Him, and we can have a greater impact if we do it together. Take some time and come together with God's wonderful people. Exciting Times

I am not sure what is going on at Kendale Acres, but I must say I like it. We have had some of the most spirit filled services so far this year. God is moving in many ways. We have seen some new folks visiting and coming back. We have seen some that we have not seen in years find there way back. We have had people on the altar after every service. To God be the glory for it all. Our theme for 2011 is "Send Me", and my prayer is that God will continue to energize the church and we will begin to see the excitement in the services roll over into the neighborhoods, families and work places. I look for God to do great things in us and through us as we focus on Him. If you have not stopped in to see us in a while, come join us for a service. All Things New

This past weekend we finished up all of our "Christmas Time" with family.  When we left Sanford, there was still snow on the ground from our Christmas weekend snow storm but when we returned it was all gone.  Part of me was glad to see it gone, but part would have liked it to hang around a little longer.  I love looking out first thing in the morning after a good snow.  Everything is peaceful and so "clean" looking.  It does not take long however between the traffic and all of the people out playing to remove that fresh look.  It reminds me of the life of a Christian.  When we get saved, Jesus cleanses us as white as snow.  (Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.)  All our sins are washed away.  Do you know what ruins that cleansing?  The same thing that ruins the fresh look of the new snow fall, man.  As man gets out and about on his daily activities, the fresh look of the fallen snow becomes worn.  The same is true for the Christian, though we get up from the altar, our sins white as snow, it does not take long back in the hustle and bustle of the world to have that newness marred.  We have a sin nature and it will not take long before the battle between good and evil begins in that new Christian.  I hate to say it, but no matter how hard we try evil will win sometimes and that fresh white cleansing will give way once again to the filth of sin.  The good news, is it does not have to stay that way.  God in His infinite wisdom provided a way that we could once again regain that fresh cleansing.  The answer is found in 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   We do not have to look long to realize we are continually sinning, the question is are we continually confessing.  I am not trying to provide an excuse to sin, Paul covers that in Romans 6.  What I am trying to show is that even though we have to wait for another winter storm to see the newness of a cleansing snow outside, we can have the newness of God's cleansing inside anytime we are willing to confess our sins and call upon His name.  Why not accept the path God has given you to Himself and make all things new?  Until next time may God bless you as you seek and serve Him.

As I was looking through some old files, I ran across a poem I wrote some years ago after Christmas. I though I would share it with you as we close out 2010 and hope it may challenge you as you look toward 2011.

T’was The Week After Christmas

T’was the week after Christmas and all through the town

What few nativity scenes their were had now been taken down.

Kids running and laughing, playing without a care

New toys they had received, but not one of them would share.

Moms in the return line at Wal-Mart, which long she did dread

If one more thing has to be returned she’d wish she were dead.

Dad’s kicked back in the recliner for his afternoon nap

And trusty old Blue lies sleeping on his lap.

Christmas had come and gone and seemed not to matter

Mom had gotten her crock-pot and dad his stepladder.

Where did all the time go, it seemed like such a flash

You think time went fast, we dare not mention the cash.

The church pews are again empty everyone has disappeared

But preacher don’t worry, Easter will soon be here.

How did all get so twisted, this very special day?

All the hustle and bustle of the “holiday” is in the way.

The Bible has been placed back on the family coffee table

And there it will remain until life becomes unstable.

Yes Christmas has come and gone and few did remember

It was not our birthday, that twenty-fifth day of December.

So why was it us that received all the gifts and joy

Were we born in that manger, were we Mary’s boy.

Somewhere along the way things have gotten off track

The true reason for Christmas has been shoved to the back.

God robed in the flesh, that’s what its about

Come to free man from sin come to seek man out.

So why have we let an “X” replace His Holy name

Why is it that so many don’t even know why He came?

When will people see that the Bible is true?

That God sent His Son because of His love for me and you.

When will people realize it is not about a holiday?

It is about God sending His son for there was no other way.

Friend turn your eyes and hearts to Jesus and soon you will see,

The true meaning of Christmas is seen in God’s love for you and me.

Then it will be more than a celebration held once a year.

It will be a relationship with a Savior that you can hold dear.

Notes From October

October has been another busy month here at Kendale. We started the month off with a Saturday work day where we accomplished some much needed grooming around the church. Then it was full speed ahead to our annual Homecoming Classic. We moved our tournament to Carolina Lakes which meant we needed more teams to make up for the increase in green fees. The call went out and our people answered with the best turnout we have had with 20 teams. We also raised more money this year than we have in previous tournaments. With the economy the way that it is, we could definitely see the hand of God in it all. Not much rest after the tournament because the very next day was Homecoming here at the church. We had a wonderful singing with the Beaverdam boys out of Chadborn, NC. As always our ladies pulled out all of the stops with a wonderful lunch with a spread to satisfy any appetite. We will be closing out our month with our annual Harvest Party this Sunday at 6pm. We are looking forward to another wonderful evening of food, fun, and fellowship. Rhythm and Tempo

I did something last week that I have never done before. I went on a golf retreat to Myrtle Beach. It was with a church in Raleigh with a group of 20 men. What a blessing to have 20 men together for a time of worship and fellowship. We played a round of golf each day and then had a Bible Study. The group leader, Matt, used the game of golf as an illustration of our walk with Christ. The one thing that sunk in most was the rhythm and tempo of the game. Most of the problems we have with our golf game is due to a lack of rhythm and/ or tempo. The same is true in our Christian walk, when our rhythm and tempo get out of whack; we begin to struggle in our Christian walk. How do we keep in rhythm, we stay in the word and keep the communication lines open through prayer. Just as our golf score will reveal our rhythm or lack thereof, our daily walk will show our rhythm or lack thereof with our relationship with God. When we are in rhythm with God, we will have his peace even during the difficult days.

Has It realy been that long

A simple review of our church site today and I saw the blog has not been updated in forever, my apologies. I guess time does fly when you are having fun. It has been a very busy summer for us here at Kendale. In the ministry busy usually means good. It is wonderful to have something to do for the Lord. We have seen some saved and several following the Lord's command of believer's baptism. We have added new members to the church and have several new families visiting with us on a regular basis. God is always better to us than we deserve. We have just wrapped up our VBS week and as usual, our workers outdid themselves. God has blessed us with several workers here at Kendale, and we are always looking for more. Some of our kids have started back to school and most of the others will start back over the next week. This is a sign that summer is coming to an end. I pray that some remember where the church is now that vacation time is over - lol We hit the summer slump like most churches, but I believe people need vacations and time away. My prayer is always that time away from the church did not mean time away from the Lord. Things will get back to normal over the upcoming weeks if there is such a thing. We are looking forward to several special services in the weeks ahead; a mission service with Bro. Logan Wolf, Revival services with Bro. Jason Hurt, and Southeastern FWB college will be with us at the end of next month. Check our calendar for events and details. Serving or being served

Ok, I have had 6 days back in reality since getting back from a little cruise vacation with the wife. No one has brought me breakfast, refilled my drink when it got empty, served me lobster, made my bed or created one of those cute little towel animals for me. Welcome back to the real world. This is the first cruise I have ever been on and other than a little sea sickness, I enjoyed every minute of it. I could not help but see the respect and the amount of service that the staff put forth into serving the guest of the ship. Now I am not sure what was said behind the scene, but to me they actually seemed to enjoy their job. I wonder if this is what it would be like if we served one another the way that God desires for us to serve. We have become a generation with an entitlement attitude walking around like this world is all about us. This is not to be the spirit of a Christian - Php 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Even Jesus before he left this earth set us an example of service as he bowed before each of the disciples and washed their feet - Joh 13:15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Now I worked in the hotel industry for 6 years before answering the call to preach, I know what it is to put on show for the guest and it is quite possible that this is what we saw on the cruise. I can tell you this is not the service Christ is looking for. He is looking for a servant’s heart, one that will serve out of a love for God and a love for fellow man. It really made me take a long look at myself, am I truly the Lord’s servant, not only serving Him, but serving those whom He has put me in contact with. I invite you to take an examination of your heart, are your serving, or waiting to be served?

Laborers Together

Yesterday during the morning service, I revealed my vision for Kendale Acres Church to the church body. My vision for 2010 is Laborers Together. Our theme verse for the year will be 1 Corinthians 3:9 "For we are laborers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building." In our message yesterday we had to come to the reality that if we are truly going to labor together, we needed to find a way to get along. So many problems in the church are caused by individuals or groups that refuse to get along. The only way to overcome this is to realize it is not about us, it is about Christ. He has called us to labor together for something greater than ourselves. There are things that we can accomplish together that we can only dream of accomplishing on our own. It is also worth noting that not only are we called to labor together, we are called to labor together with God. We are not simply laborers for God, but with God. What an awesome thought, God chose me to work with Him. It is our goal at Kendale Acres Church in 2010 to bring the focus of our ministry to the place it should be, Christ. We will seek to labor together to promote His name and His kingdom throughout our community and around the world. But in this challenge to the church, there is also a challenge to us all, keep the main thing the main thing. Imagine what could be accomplished for the cause of Christ if believers learned to focus less on our differences and more on what makes us the same. May we all labor together in 2010 for the cause of Christ.

A New Year

I was hoping to be able to sneak in to the New Year without it being to eventful. With all of the hustle and bustle to close out 2009 I have fallen behind in a few areas and was hoping to use the early days of 2010 to catch up. Life had other plans, we had a leak in the parsonage while we where gone for Christmas so now I am tearing out the bathroom floor and since I am going to be in there anyway, I am doing the renovations originally planned for later in the year. I am also trying to get a tentative 2010 calendar together and preparing my "Vision Sunday" service. I have also promised myself that I am going to be better about updating the pastor's blog. It is my goal in 2010 to have an update at least once a week so that we can keep you all up to date on what is happening here at Kendale Acres. My prayer is that you will enjoy reading these updates and that you will join us in prayer throughout the year for the ministries of Kendale Acres Church. First on our agenda is a church wide cleaning day this Saturday to get God's house looking nice for the New Year. This will be followed Sunday with our annual "Vision Sunday" when I will unveil my vision for the church in 2010. Hijacked

At some time over the past two weeks, my computer has been hijacked. It does not seem to affect anything but by searches on the internet. Whenever I click on a link with in a search, it reroutes me to a different page normally selling something to do with what I’ve searched for. It is very annoying and I have tried every fix that people have recommended. I have found a way to work around it, but I want it stopped. Sometime this weekend or early next week after all of our Christmas programs are over and church slows down, I have decided to just reformat the hard drive and start from scratch. Not a fun thought, but it will get everything back working the way it is supposed to.

As I thought of this procedure, I could not help but think of the lives of many Christians, myself included. Sometime without us really noticing, our lives get hijacked. We then find that we are not performing the way that we ought to perform. When we notice it, it bothers us because the Holy Spirit begins to convict our hearts. But what happens, many times we find a way to work around it. We may even talk to others, listen to preaching, or read devotionals on how to “fix” it. The truth is sometimes the only way to fix it is to reformat. We need to go back to that place where all things were made new. Where God reprogrammed our heart to a work far greater than anything this world could offer. For Jacob, that place was Bethel. For you it may be a prayer closet, a park bench, or an altar. Wherever that place may be; if you find yourself of track today hijacked by the things around you, find some time to meet with God. Allow Him to reboot your hard drive and bring things back in line with where they are supposed to be.

Holding Forth The Word of Life

I had the awesome privilege of being a part of Good News FWB Church's Holding Forth The Word of Life Bible Conference. This is the first one they have ever done. We had two preachers each night Sunday through Wednesday. I can only speak for myself, but God met with me. My heart has been challenged at a level that I have not felt in some time. It never ceases to amaze me what God can and will do when we will take time to be still and Know that He is God. I appreciate so much my brothers; Joel, Tommy, and Chris. Great job of taking the word of God and challenging hearts. Thank you so much Bro. Glen for putting this whole thing together. I am not sure how much I contributed during my two services, but I know I have taken a tremendous amount away from the other services. If they post the sermons on their website, I will try and place a link to them so that your heart may be challenged as mine was. I praise God for the young man that was saved during the conference and all of those that rededicated themselves to the Lord throughout the week. I certainly praise him that after I preached Wednesday night that my son was on the altar putting things back in order in his life. Thank you Bro. Joel for taking the time to pray with him. My heart is so full I could go on, but I will close for now. I just wanted to take a moment and update on the goodness of God and His continuing work.

Take Time to Encourage

We have been doing a Sunday night study through 1 Thessalonians. One thing that is hard to miss in this epistle is Paul's love and concern for his brothers and sisters in Christ. He cried when they cried, but just as important, he rejoiced when they rejoiced. For some reason in our society today it is hard to find people that are genuinely excited to see God's blessings in the lives of others. I think about the ministry, as a pastor I will share what God is doing with a fellow minister and instead of praising God with me, they have to think of a time that they have out done what ever it is that has been accomplished. Can't you just take time to praise God with me. Or even worse when I here ministers nitpicking at another ministers ministry because God is blessing and they are not seeing the same results in their church. Can't we just stop and praise God for his work. I wonder how much more could be accomplished in the cause of Christ if we could learn to encourage one another. What a joy its to hear about God working in some of our sister churches. Let this encourage us to pray harder and work more faithfully to see the same effect in our church. We all go through struggles from time to time, instead of beating others down to help our own pity party, lets use their blessing as an encouragement to keep on pressing on. Let's face it, look around you, we are all blessed. Thank you Lord for what you are doing in my ministry and I praise you for your work here and your work in all of the churches that are faithfully proclaiming the name of the Lord.

Better Late Than Never

OK, I am late again but what is it they say, better late than never. I have brought the church website up-to-date with pictures and sermons. We have been so busy here at Kendale, but please do not take that as a complaint. God is truly blessing the work here. Summer is about over so vacations are about out of the way and our worship crowd is getting back to normal. We are gearing up for Revival with Bro. Mark Cash, associate pastor at Hilltop FWB. I went to school one year with Mark at SE and renewed our friendship through some church services we have attended at Hilltop since moving to North Carolina. I am excited about having him come. I find that after the hustle and bustle of summer vacations nothing brings you back into focus on the Lord's work like a good ole fashion revival. We have also started raising money and recruiting teams for our annual Homecoming Classic. This was a great event last year and we are looking for an even better event this year. On the day following the tournament is our Homecoming service, we are looking for a great time in the Lord with special music, good preaching, and what is a homecoming without good eating. We Made It

Another wonderful year of VBS. We had our best attendance in my three years here at Kendale Acres. We had a high night of 42 and averaged in the mid 30's for the rest of the week. Everything seemed to go real smooth this year, maybe we are getting the hang of this thing. We had over 35 workers every night, what a blessing. Seeing the smiles on the kids faces every night made all the work worth it. Only God knows the eternal significance of this week. I want to give a very special thank you to all of our workers. We could not have done this week with out you. One more event as we will close out the week with a tailgate party tomorrow night from 5pm-7pm. Come and join us if you can.

Way Behind

Ok I am running way behind on keeping the sermons and the Pastor's Pen up to date. Never fear, the sermons are loading as I type. I will blog about this later, but we are closing out a very successful week of Vacation Bible School tonight. We had a high night of 42 and maybe we will break that tonight. Anyway, I will give you all the updates on that this weekend. I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know our recent sermons will be on the website today. Gearing up for VBS

VBS is less than a month away, and I feel like we are so far behind. We are using a sports theme this year - "Get In The Game". I do already have the lesson themes together, now all I have to do is write them. Did some shopping this past weekend for decorations. We have chosen about 10 crafts and now need to pick the 5 that we will do. We hope to have that decided by the end of the week. Letters will go in the mail tomorrow for the children that we have had in the past. The online registration is already up and running. Maybe we are not as far behind as I thought. Anyway, we are looking forward to a great VBS this year. June Update

I have not kept this blog as up-to-date as I would like. It seems that every time I think things are going to slow down I find something else to put on the schedule. Things here at the church are going great and God is really blessing. Attendance is up, and we have had a first time visitor each week for the past two months. We have also had two salvation decisions and I will be talking with them about following through in believer’s baptism. My daughter, who got saved at VBS a few years ago, also wants to be baptized. I decided not to push her, but I think she is now ready. As always we are staying busy. In just over a month’s time, we have had a special service for Family Day, Mother's Day, Graduation Sunday, and Father's Day. We have completed phase 1 and 2 of our audiovisual upgrades. Phase 1 new video camera to tape our services and a monitor in the nursery so our workers can watch the services. Phase 2 a new sound booth and moving our sound equipment from upstairs to downstairs. We are only $1800 away from our goal for phase 3, installing projectors in the sanctuary. We are praying to have that money raised by the end of the summer and the phase completed by September. God continues to use the preaching of His word and people are responding to the altar regularly. God has done a tremendous work in this church over the past two years. It is hard for me to believe that I celebrated my two year anniversary here at Kendale at the beginning of this month. Time has flown by. I can honestly say I have never enjoyed the ministry so much. I look forward to many years here in Sanford and know that God has big things ahead for us as we faithfully follow Him. Thanks for keeping up-to-date through these blogs. Wonderful State Meeting

I have just returned from our NCFWB annual state meeting in New Bern, NC. What a wonderful time of rejuvenation. As a preacher, I spend most of my time preaching. Just like everyone else however, I need to be preached to. The messages brought over these past two days were just what my heart needed. My spiritual battery has been recharged and I am ready to press forward with the calling God has put on my life. I am always excited to take advantage of these opportunities. I would put our FWB preachers up against anyone. Thanks for all who serve the Lord behind our pulpits. For you laymen, don't forget to pray for your pastor today - we need it more than you know.

Family Day

We had a wonderful family day yesterday at Kendale. We had 95 for service and about 120 for the food, fun, and fellowship. We had a full altar at the end of the message that included one of our men in the neighborhood giving his life to Jesus Christ. We praise the Lord for this new addition to the family of God. After service we had hotdogs, hamburgers on the grill and something for everyone to do. Bouncers, giant slide, horseshoes, ladder ball, chipping green, horseback riding, and of course the Kendale Lock-up. The rain held off and God blessed us with a wonderful day. In June 2008 we held our first annual golf fellowship. Though all had a good time, the temperature was over 90 degrees, which robbed us of some of the enjoyment. Figuring we would avoid another 90+ day we decided to move the tournament up this year. With the calendar quickly getting booked we squeezed it in this past Saturday, April 25th. Surely in April we would not have to worry about a 90-degree day. It is times like these that I am convinced God has a sense of humor. The temperature this past Saturday - 91 degrees. Now as one of our men pointed out, “but preacher it is not as humid”. I love when people say that. When you are over 300lbs., hot is hot humid or not. Anyway we did have another good day of fellowship and once again the trophy eluded my teams hands. Hey there is always next year; maybe we will have it January. Does it hit 90 in January? Wonderful Day

As the sun rose in the background, we gathered outside for our annual sunrise service. Though a little chilly, it was a great service. From there it was off to the mixing bowl as I mixed pancake batter for the traditional Easter breakfast cooked and served by the men of the church. That was followed by a time of fellowship and then a wonderful Easter service. As the challenge was given to "take up your cross" the pews quickly emptied and the altar filled as one by one the congregation came to the front picked up their cross and knelt at the altar. Praise God for the service and we pray that all will follow through with the commitments that were made. Listen to today's sermon or any other sermon here.

Busy Weekend

Been a busy weekend preparing for one of the biggest days in the church calendar. It should not be that way, but this is the only day we get a shot at some of those "Chreasters". We have a sunrise service planned followed by the men cooking breakfast for the church. Then it is off to Sunday School and then Worship hour. As always I have a little surprise for the church in our Easter sermon. I want my congregation to leave with more than just a "traditional" Easter message. I want to bring the story to life. I have prayed and I believe God has given me the answer in a message I have titled "Is there more to the Easter story". I guess you will have to visit the church site to hear the answer. I pray you each have a blessed Easter service.
